2D migration offers many new possibilities.
50 years ago, the first EAN barcode was scanned at a supermarket checkout. This scan had a huge impact on retail and information processing.
Today, five decades later, we are in the middle of the transition from 1D to 2D barcodes. The 1D EAN barcode contains only the GTIN. Additional data such as expiry date, batch, or serial number is represented by a 2D code. GS1 Digital Link puts these attributes in a standardized URL. This allows customers to scan the code with their smartphones.
Information that was previously only available in printed form can now be provided digitally. This saves money for the manufacturers and provides a better shopping experience for consumers. Increased customer loyalty through targeted communication and promotions is one of the many additional benefits.
